The Issen (literally "one flash") is Onimusha's signature mechanic -- a perfectly timed counter that instantly kills most enemies and deals massive damage to bosses. Mastering Issen is the difference between a good player and a great one.
How Issen Works
Issen triggers when you press the attack button within a specific timing window as an enemy's attack is about to connect. If successful, time slows down briefly, your character delivers a devastating single strike, and the enemy dies instantly (or takes massive damage if it is a boss or strong enemy). The window for Issen is tight -- only about 8 frames (0.133 seconds at 60fps) for normal enemies and even tighter for some attack types.
The Three Issen Timing Windows
There are actually three different Issen timing windows, each with different properties:
- Early Issen (Frame -8 to -5): Triggered slightly before the enemy attack would connect. Deals 100% damage and has the longest recovery. This is the easiest Issen to land consistently.
- Perfect Issen (Frame -4 to -1): Triggered at the exact moment the attack is about to hit. Deals 150% damage, has shorter recovery, and builds more Oni gauge. This is the ideal window to aim for.
- Late Issen (Frame 0 to +2): Triggered just as the attack connects. Deals 120% damage but has very short recovery, making it better for chaining. Riskiest because if you miss the window you get hit.
Visual and Audio Cues
Successful Issen has clear visual and audio feedback: a bright flash of light, a distinctive "ting" sound effect, and the enemy dies dramatically. Perfect Issen has an even brighter flash and a higher-pitched sound. Learning to recognize these cues helps you understand which window you are hitting and adjust your timing accordingly.

Chain Issen Technique and Combo Routes
Chain Issen is the advanced technique of performing multiple Issens in sequence against multiple enemies. When done correctly, you can clear entire rooms of enemies in seconds without taking any damage.
How Chain Issen Works
After a successful Issen, there is a 1.5-second window where if another enemy attacks you, you can chain another Issen with a slightly more generous timing window (12 frames instead of 8). Each consecutive Issen in the chain adds a damage multiplier and builds Oni gauge faster. The chain ends if you take damage, miss an Issen, or no enemy attacks you within the 1.5-second window.
Chain Scaling and Multipliers
Each Issen in a chain deals more damage than the last: 1st Issen = 100% damage, 2nd = 120%, 3rd = 150%, 4th = 180%, 5th+ = 200%. This means a 5-chain Issen deals double the damage of a single Issen, which is often enough to one-shot enemies that would normally survive a regular Issen. The Oni gauge gain also scales, with each chain Issen building 1.5x more gauge than the previous one.
| Chain # | Damage Multiplier | Oni Gauge Gain | Timing Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Single Issen) | 1.0x | 1 bar segment | 8 frames |
| 2 | 1.2x | 1.5 segments | 10 frames |
| 3 | 1.5x | 2.25 segments | 12 frames |
| 4 | 1.8x | 3.0 segments | 14 frames |
| 5+ | 2.0x | 4.0 segments | 16 frames |
Setting Up Chain Issen
The key to chain Issen is positioning. You want to be surrounded by enemies (but not too close) so that each one attacks in sequence. Walk into a group of enemies, let them start their attacks, then Issen the first one. As soon as the first Issen animation starts, start looking for the next enemy attack. The chain Issen window starts immediately after the Issen connects, so you do not have to wait for the animation to finish before timing the next one.
Counter Issen and Air Issen Variants
Beyond the basic ground Issen, there are several specialized Issen variants that work in different situations. Mastering these gives you Issen options in virtually any combat scenario.
Counter Issen
Counter Issen is triggered by blocking an attack at the exact moment it hits (perfect block) and then immediately pressing attack. It is essentially a block-canceled Issen. The timing is slightly different from regular Issen -- you press block for the perfect block, then immediately transition to attack. The window is about 6 frames, tighter than regular Issen, but the reward is that you can trigger it even if you misjudge the regular Issen timing. Counter Issen deals 120% of normal Issen damage and has the same chain potential.
Air Issen
Air Issen is performed while airborne, either after jumping or being launched. It works the same way as ground Issen -- press attack as an enemy's aerial attack is about to connect. Air Issen is particularly useful against flying enemies and enemies with jumping attacks. It also has utility for traversal -- if you Air Issen an enemy at the peak of your jump, you gain additional height and distance, which can be used to reach secret areas.
Backstep Issen
Backstep Issen is performed by dodging backward and then immediately Issening as the enemy's attack misses. The timing is different because you are moving away from the attack rather than into it. Backstep Issen deals the same damage as regular Issen but has the advantage of creating distance after the attack, which is useful when you are surrounded.
Magic Issen
Magic Issen is the rarest and most powerful variant. It is triggered by using a magic spell at the exact moment an enemy attacks. If timed correctly, the magic spell comes out instantly (no charge time) and hits with Issen-level damage. Magic Issen deals 300% of normal magic damage and can hit multiple enemies. It consumes both MP and Oni gauge, so it is not something you use frequently, but it is devastating in the right situations.
Issen Timing by Enemy Type
Every enemy type has different attack animations with different speeds and tells. Learning the timing for each enemy type is essential for consistent Issen success.
Basic Grunt Enemies
Basic sword-wielding grunts have the most predictable Issen timing. Their standard attack is a horizontal slash with a clear windup. The Issen window is approximately when the sword reaches shoulder height during the windup -- about 0.5 seconds after they start their attack animation. Their charging thrust attack has a different timing -- the Issen window is much earlier, right as they start moving forward.
Fast Enemies (Ninjas, Dogs)
Fast enemies like ninjas and demon dogs have much tighter Issen windows because their attacks come out quickly. For ninjas, the Issen window for their slash attack is only about 5 frames, and the tell is very subtle -- watch for their shoulder twitch right before the attack. Demon dogs have a pounce attack where the Issen window is at the peak of their jump, right before they descend on you.
Large Enemies (Ogres, Golems)
Large enemies have slow, powerful attacks with long windups. Their Issen windows are actually generous (10-15 frames) because the attacks are so slow, but the challenge is reading which attack they will use. Ogres have three different attacks (overhead smash, horizontal sweep, grab), each with different timing. The overhead smash is the easiest to Issen -- the window is when the club is at the top of its arc.
Boss Issen Opportunities
Bosses cannot be one-shot by Issen (except in very specific NG+ scenarios with extreme damage builds), but Issen still deals massive damage and builds Oni gauge quickly. Every boss has specific attacks that are Issen-able. Learning which attacks can be Issened and their timing is one of the keys to fast boss kills. On average, a successful boss Issen deals about 10-15% of the boss's max HP in damage.
Issen Practice Methods and Drills
Issen is a mechanical skill that requires practice to master. Here are structured drills and practice methods that will help you improve your Issen consistency.
Beginner Drill: Single Enemy Issen
Start with the most basic drill: find an area with a single respawning basic enemy (the courtyard in Chapter 2 is good for this). Let the enemy attack you, then try to Issen it. Focus on getting the timing right, not on speed. If you miss and get hit, just heal and try again. Practice until you can land 5 Issens in a row without missing. Then move to a faster enemy type.
Intermediate Drill: Chain Issen Practice
Once you are comfortable with single Issens, move to chain Issen practice. The best place is the Dark Realm floors 5-10, where groups of 3-5 basic enemies spawn regularly. Walk into a group, let them surround you, and try to chain as many Issens as possible. Start with a goal of 3-chain, then work up to 5-chain. Remember: after each Issen, immediately start looking for the next enemy's attack tell.
Advanced Drill: Perfect Issen Focus
Once you can consistently land Issens, start focusing on Perfect Issen (the middle timing window). Perfect Issen gives 50% more damage and builds Oni gauge faster. The audio cue for Perfect Issen is a higher-pitched "ting" sound. Practice in the same areas, but this time aim specifically for the Perfect Issen cue. It may take 20-30 hours of practice to get 80%+ Perfect Issen rate.
Real-World Application
The best Issen players have a 90%+ success rate against basic enemies and 70%+ against fast enemies. This level of mastery typically requires 50+ hours of focused practice. Do not get discouraged if you struggle at first -- Issen is designed to be a high-skill, high-reward mechanic. Even a 50% success rate makes you significantly more effective than not using Issen at all.
Issen and Oni Gauge Synergy
Issen is one of the fastest ways to build the Oni gauge, and Oni Awakening makes Issen even more powerful. The synergy between these two systems creates a powerful combat loop for advanced players.
Oni Gauge Gain from Issen
A single normal Issen fills approximately 1/6 of one Oni gauge bar (about 0.17 bars). A Perfect Issen fills 0.25 bars. A 5-chain Issen fills about 1 full bar total. This means a skilled player can fill an entire 6-bar Oni gauge in just 3-4 groups of enemies using chain Issen, compared to 8-10 groups using normal combat.
Oni Awakening Issen Boost
During Oni Awakening, all Issen damage is doubled (2.0x multiplier). This means a Perfect Chain Issen during Awakening deals 4.0x normal Issen damage -- enough to one-shot almost any non-boss enemy in the game, even on hard mode. It also means Issen deals significant damage to bosses during Awakening, potentially 25-30% of their max HP per successful Issen.
The Issen-Awakening Loop
The optimal advanced combat loop is: (1) Use chain Issen on groups of enemies to quickly fill the Oni gauge, (2) Activate Oni Awakening when the gauge is full, (3) During Awakening, use Issen on every possible attack for massive damage, (4) The Issens during Awakening refill the Oni gauge faster than normal because of the chain multiplier, extending your Awakening time. With perfect execution, you can maintain Oni Awakening almost indefinitely as long as there are enemies to Issen.
Common Issen Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Even intermediate players make common Issen mistakes. Here are the most frequent errors and how to correct them.
Mistake 1: Pressing Too Early
The most common mistake is pressing the attack button too early, before the Issen window starts. This results in a regular attack that gets interrupted by the enemy's attack, causing you to take damage. The fix: wait slightly longer than you think you need to. Most players are surprised by how late the Issen window actually is. Try counting "one-two" in your head after the enemy starts their attack, then press.
Mistake 2: Wrong Attack Button
Issen only works with the light attack button, not the heavy attack button. Many players instinctively press heavy attack when they see an incoming attack, which does not trigger Issen and leaves you vulnerable. The fix: train yourself to always use light attack for Issen. Heavy attack has its uses, but not for Issen.
Mistake 3: Moving During the Window
If you are moving (especially left or right) when you try to Issen, your character will do a moving attack instead of an Issen. The moving attack has different timing and will not trigger the Issen effect. The fix: plant your feet before attempting an Issen. Stop moving for half a second, let the enemy attack come in, then Issen. You can start moving again immediately after the Issen connects.
Mistake 4: Overcommitting to Chains
Once players learn chain Issen, they often try to force chains even when enemies are not attacking in sequence. This leads to getting hit when you are waiting for an attack that never comes. The fix: if 1.5 seconds pass without another enemy attacking, just do a normal attack or reposition. The chain bonus is not worth taking damage for.
