Oni Power Awakening is Onimusha's signature transformation mechanic. When activated, Samanosuke transforms into a powerful Oni form with enhanced stats and unique abilities. Mastering Awakening is essential for high-level play.
What Is Oni Power Awakening?
Oni Power Awakening is a temporary transformation that dramatically increases your combat power. When activated, your character's appearance changes (skin turns red, eyes glow, Oni features emerge), and you gain significant stat boosts. Awakening consumes the Oni gauge -- a special resource bar that fills as you deal and take damage in combat.
Awakening Stat Boosts
| Stat | Base | Awakened | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack Power | 100% | 150% | 1.5x |
| Defense | 100% | 130% | 1.3x |
| Movement Speed | 100% | 115% | 1.15x |
| Attack Speed | 100% | 120% | 1.2x |
| Issen Damage | 100% | 200% | 2.0x |
| Magic Cost | 100% | 50% | 0.5x |
The most important boosts are the 1.5x damage multiplier and the halved magic cost. The magic cost reduction is particularly powerful because it lets you cast twice as many spells per MP bar, dramatically increasing burst damage potential.
How to Fill the Oni Gauge
The Oni gauge fills through several methods:
- Dealing damage to enemies (fills about 1/10 bar per 100 damage dealt)
- Taking damage (fills about 1/5 bar per 50 HP lost)
- Absorbing purple Oni souls (fills 1 full bar per soul)
- Using Oni Gauge Potions (fills 3 bars per potion)
- Performing Issen (fills about 1/4 bar per Issen)
The fastest way to fill the Oni gauge is through chain Issen on groups of enemies. A 5-chain Issen fills nearly 2 full bars by itself.

Awakening Duration and Extension
Base Awakening duration is only 20 seconds, which goes by quickly in combat. Learning how to extend and manage your Awakening time is key to getting the most out of it.
Base Duration and Drain Rate
Base Awakening lasts for 20 seconds with a full 6-bar Oni gauge. The gauge drains at a rate of 0.3 bars per second. Each bar of Oni gauge gives approximately 3.33 seconds of Awakening time. With the minimum 1 bar required to activate, Awakening lasts about 3.33 seconds per bar.
Duration Extension Methods
Several things extend Awakening duration:
- Oni Costume: +30% duration (26 seconds with 6 bars). One of the biggest single extensions.
- Oni God Attire: +50% duration (30 seconds with 6 bars). The maximum extension from any single source.
- Oni Ring (accessory): +20% duration (24 seconds with 6 bars). Found in Dark Realm floor 40.
- Dealing damage during Awakening: Each 200 damage dealt adds 1 second to Awakening time. This means aggressive play extends your Awakening.
- Killing enemies during Awakening: Each enemy killed during Awakening adds 2 seconds of duration.
Maximum Possible Duration
With all duration extensions (Oni God Attire + Oni Ring + constant kills + damage dealt), it is theoretically possible to maintain Awakening indefinitely as long as there are enemies to kill. In practice, experienced players can maintain Awakening for 60+ seconds in enemy-dense areas like the Dark Realm by constantly killing enemies to refresh the duration.
Duration Calculation Example
With Oni Costume (1.3x), Oni Ring (1.2x), and 6 bars: Base 20s x 1.3 x 1.2 = 31.2 seconds base duration. If you kill 5 enemies during Awakening (adds 10 seconds) and deal 1,000 damage (adds 5 seconds), total duration is 31.2 + 10 + 5 = 46.2 seconds. That is more than double the base duration!
Awakened Form Combat and Combos
Awakened form has unique combat properties that change how you should fight. The boosted stats and reduced magic cost open up new combo possibilities that are not available in normal form.
Awakened Form Attack Changes
In Awakened form, all attacks get the 1.5x damage boost, but some attacks change more than others:
- Basic attacks: 1.5x damage, 1.2x attack speed. Faster and stronger across the board.
- Heavy attacks: 1.5x damage with wider hitboxes. Many heavy attacks gain additional hits or larger AOE.
- Issen: 2.0x damage (instead of 1.5x). This is the biggest relative boost for any attack type.
- Magic spells: Same damage per spell, but 50% MP cost means you can cast twice as many. Effective magic DPS doubles.
- Ultimate weapon attacks: Level 5 ultimate abilities deal 1.5x damage and have 1.5x larger AOE.
Optimal Awakened Combos
Single-target highest DPS: Magic cancel loop. Because magic costs 50% less during Awakening, you can cast spells twice as often. The magic cancel loop (Fire -> Ice -> Lightning -> repeat) deals massive damage and can be maintained almost indefinitely with 100 MP. Estimated DPS: 400-600 depending on weapon and gear.
Multi-target / crowd control: Wide heavy attack spam. Awakened heavy attacks have wider hitboxes and deal more damage, making them great for groups. Combined with the 1.2x attack speed boost, you can clear rooms very quickly.
Single-target (no MP): Air combo loops. Launch enemies with heavy attack, air combo, slam, dodge cancel, repeat. This deals consistent damage without consuming MP. Estimated DPS: 250-350.
The Awakened Issen Loop
One of the most powerful Awakened techniques is the Issen loop: use Awakening, then Issen every enemy attack. Each Issen deals 2x normal Issen damage (which is already percentage-based on boss HP), and each successful Issen refills some of your Oni gauge, extending the Awakening. Against groups of enemies, you can maintain Awakening almost indefinitely by chaining Issens.
When to Use Awakening: Strategic Usage Guide
Knowing when to activate Awakening is just as important as knowing what to do during it. Wasting Awakening on trivial fights means you might not have it when you need it for a boss.
Always Save for Bosses
The general rule is: always save at least 3 bars of Oni gauge for boss fights. Boss fights are where Awakening provides the most value because you are fighting a single high-HP target for an extended period. Using Awakening on trash mobs is usually a waste unless you are in a farming run and have plenty of gauge to spare.
Pre-Boss Preparation
Before entering a boss room, you want to have as full an Oni gauge as possible. If your gauge is not full, fight a few enemies near the boss room to fill it up. Also use any Oni gauge items you want to save for the fight. Entering a boss fight with 6 full bars gives you maximum Awakening time and flexibility.
When to Activate During Boss Fights
There are two schools of thought on when to activate Awakening during a boss fight:
Strategy 1: Activate at the start. Use Awakening immediately to burn the boss down fast. Good for speedkills and for players who can maintain Awakening through damage dealt. Risky because if you mess up the opening burst, you wasted your Awakening.
Strategy 2: Save for Phase 3. Save Awakening for the boss's final and hardest phase. This is safer because you use your strongest form when the boss is at its most dangerous. The downside is that you might not get full value from your Awakening if the fight ends quickly.
For most intermediate players, we recommend Strategy 2 (save for final phase) on your first few attempts at a boss. Once you know the fight well and can execute the opening burst reliably, switch to Strategy 1 for faster kills.
Emergency Defensive Use
Do not forget that activating Awakening gives you 15 frames of invincibility. This can save you from attacks you cannot dodge. If you see an attack coming that you cannot avoid, activate Awakening for the i-frames. It is better to waste an Awakening bar than to die or take heavy damage.
Oni Gauge Farming and Fast Filling
Sometimes you need to fill your Oni gauge quickly before a boss fight or challenge. Here are the fastest ways to build Oni gauge.
Fastest Gauge Building Methods
1. Chain Issen on groups: The absolute fastest way to fill the Oni gauge. A 5-chain Issen on a group of 5 enemies fills nearly 2 full Oni bars in about 5 seconds. If you can find a group of weak enemies, you can fill 6 bars in 15-20 seconds using chain Issen.
2. Taking damage (risky): Taking damage fills the gauge faster than dealing damage. 50 HP lost fills about 1/5 bar, so losing 250 HP fills a full bar. This is the fastest method but obviously risky -- you might die. Only use this if you have plenty of healing and are preparing for a fight where you will heal anyway.
3. Oni Gauge items: Oni Gauge Potions fill 3 bars instantly. These are consumables you find in chests or buy from shops. The most reliable method but consumes resources.
4. Purple Oni souls: Each purple soul fills 1 full bar. Enemies drop these rarely (about 3% drop rate). Not reliable for fast filling, but nice when you get them.
Best Gauge Farming Locations
Early game: The courtyard in the West Area (Chapter 2-3) has groups of 4-5 basic enemies that respawn. Use chain Issen to fill 2-3 bars per run.
Mid game: Dark Realm floors 1-5. Groups of 3-5 enemies per floor. Fill 2 bars per floor if you use chain Issen. 5 floors = 8-10 bars worth of gauge (but you only hold 6 max).
Late game: Dark Realm floors 11-15. More enemies per floor and more groups per floor. You can fill 6 bars in 2-3 floors with good chain Issen.
Gauge Management During Long Fights
During long fights (bosses with 3 phases, the Dark Realm), you need to manage your Oni gauge carefully. The general pattern is: build gauge during safe phases, spend gauge during dangerous phases or vulnerability windows. Do not let your gauge sit at 6 bars for long -- that is wasted potential. If your gauge is full and you are not in immediate danger, use Awakening to burn through the current phase faster.
Advanced Awakening Techniques
Beyond the basics, there are several advanced Awakening techniques that top players use. These require practice but significantly increase your Awakening effectiveness.
Awakening Cancel
You can cancel the Awakening activation animation with a dodge or attack. Normally, activating Awakening has a 15-frame startup animation (with i-frames). If you cancel the last few frames with a dodge or attack, you start fighting 5-10 frames sooner. This is a minor optimization but adds up over many fights. To do it: press the Awakening button, then immediately press dodge or attack when the i-frames start.
Dual Awakening Glitch
In some versions of the game, there is a glitch that allows you to activate Awakening twice for double the stat boost. This is done by activating Awakening and then immediately using an Oni Gauge Potion before the transformation completes. If timed correctly, you get a second Awakening stack, resulting in 2.25x damage (1.5 x 1.5) instead of 1.5x. This glitch is patched in most modern versions and is considered cheating by the speedrunning community.
Awakening Swap
You can switch weapons during the Awakening activation animation. This lets you start Awakening with one weapon (for the element or attack type) and immediately switch to another weapon once the transformation is complete. It is useful for setting up element reactions: activate Awakening with a fire weapon for the opening burst, then switch to ice weapon to trigger a Steam Burst reaction.
The Infinite Awakening Loop
In areas with enough enemies, you can maintain Awakening indefinitely by killing enemies fast enough. Each kill adds 2 seconds to the timer, so if you kill an enemy every 2 seconds, you never run out of Awakening time. This is easiest in the Dark Realm where enemy density is high. With the Oni Costume + Oni Ring + constant kills, skilled players have maintained Awakening for 5+ minutes straight, clearing entire Dark Realm sections in one Awakened state.
Awakening Issen Chain
The ultimate Awakened combat technique is the Awakening Issen chain: during Awakening, chain Issen after Issen on groups of enemies. Each Issen deals double damage and refills the Oni gauge faster than normal because of the chain multiplier. The Oni gauge drains during Awakening, but the Issen gauge gain can offset or even exceed the drain, effectively making Awakening last as long as you keep Issening. This is the highest-skill, highest-reward technique in the game.
Awakening-Focused Builds and Loadouts
If you want to maximize your Awakening potential, build your entire loadout around it. Here are the best Awakening-focused builds for different playstyles.
Maximum Damage Build
Weapon: Demon Sword (if available) or Enryuu (fire longsword) at level 5. Highest base damage.
Accessory 1: Oni Gauntlets (+25% heavy attack damage)
Accessory 2: Crimson Amulet (+10% ATK when HP > 80%)
Costume: Oni Costume (+20% ATK, +30% Awakening duration)
Playstyle: Activate Awakening at the start of fights and burst enemies down with heavy attacks and magic. Prioritize damage above all else. Best for speedkills and players who can avoid damage consistently.
Total damage multiplier during Awakening: 1.5 (Awakening) x 1.2 (costume) x 1.1 (amulet) x 1.25 (gauntlets, heavy only) = Up to 2.475x on heavy attacks.
Maximum Duration Build
Weapon: Raizen (lightning katana) at level 5. Fast attacks = more damage dealt = more duration extension from kills.
Accessory 1: Oni Ring (+20% Awakening duration)
Accessory 2: Soul Amulet (more souls, but swap for Attack Speed Ring if you want faster kills)
Costume: Oni God Attire (+50% Awakening duration, +20% all stats) -- or Oni Costume if you do not have Oni God Attire.
Playstyle: Focus on killing enemies quickly to extend Awakening duration. Use fast attacks and Issen to maintain the gauge. Best for farming and clearing large areas of enemies.
Base duration with 6 bars: 20s x 1.5 (Oni God Attire) x 1.2 (Oni Ring) = 36 seconds base, extendable to 60+ seconds with kills.
Balanced Build
Weapon: Raizen (fast and versatile)
Accessory 1: Protection Amulet (20% damage reduction -- good for survival during Awakening)
Accessory 2: Oni Ring (20% more duration)
Costume: Dark Samurai (+10% ATK, +10% DEF) -- balanced all-around
Playstyle: Good for general play and hard mode. You have decent damage, decent duration, and decent survivability. Not optimal at any one thing but good for everything.
