In Onimusha Warlords, each weapon (except the Bishamon Sword) can be upgraded through 5 levels using red souls absorbed by the Oni Gauntlet. Each level increases the weapon's attack power and, at certain levels, enhances its magic attack.
The upgrade cost increases progressively, with higher levels requiring more red souls. Understanding the full upgrade path for each weapon helps you plan your soul farming and prioritize which weapons to max first.
| Weapon | Base Attack | Max Attack | Total Soul Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal Sword | 20 | 60 | 50 red souls |
| Raizan (Thunder) | 30 | 90 | 50 red souls |
| Enryuu (Fire) | 35 | 100 | 50 red souls |
| Shiden (Wind) | 32 | 95 | 50 red souls |
| Bishamon Sword | 80 | 150 | 0 (pre-maxed) |
| Kaede's Dagger | 15 | 40 | 30 red souls |

Normal Sword Upgrade Path
| Level | Attack | Red Souls Needed | Cumulative | Magic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Base) | 20 | 0 | 0 | None |
| 2 | 30 | 5 | 5 | None |
| 3 | 40 | 10 | 15 | None |
| 4 | 50 | 15 | 30 | None |
| 5 (Max) | 60 | 20 | 50 | None |
Recommendation: Do not upgrade the Normal Sword. It is replaced by elemental swords early in the game and has no magic attack at any level. Save your souls for elemental weapons.
Elemental Sword Upgrade Paths
All three elemental swords follow the same upgrade cost structure but have different base and max attack values:
Raizan (Thunder Sword)
| Level | Attack | Souls Needed | Cumulative | Magic Attack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Base) | 30 | 0 | 0 | Lightning bolt (1 bar) |
| 2 | 45 | 5 | 5 | Lightning bolt (1 bar) |
| 3 | 60 | 10 | 15 | Enhanced bolt (1 bar) |
| 4 | 75 | 15 | 30 | Enhanced bolt (1 bar) |
| 5 (Max) | 90 | 20 | 50 | Piercing bolt (1 bar) |
Enryuu (Fire Sword)
| Level | Attack | Souls Needed | Cumulative | Magic Attack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Base) | 35 | 0 | 0 | Flame pillar (1 bar) |
| 2 | 50 | 5 | 5 | Flame pillar (1 bar) |
| 3 | 65 | 10 | 15 | Enhanced pillar (1 bar) |
| 4 | 85 | 15 | 30 | Enhanced pillar (1 bar) |
| 5 (Max) | 100 | 20 | 50 | Massive pillar (1 bar) |
Shiden (Wind Sword)
| Level | Attack | Souls Needed | Cumulative | Magic Attack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Base) | 32 | 0 | 0 | Wind arc (1 bar) |
| 2 | 47 | 5 | 5 | Wind arc (1 bar) |
| 3 | 62 | 10 | 15 | Enhanced arc (1 bar) |
| 4 | 80 | 15 | 30 | Enhanced arc (1 bar) |
| 5 (Max) | 95 | 20 | 50 | Wide arc (1 bar) |
Bishamon Sword (No Upgrade Path)
| Level | Attack | Souls Needed | Magic Attack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max (only level) | 150 | 0 (pre-maxed) | Room-wide AoE blast (1 bar) |
The Bishamon Sword is obtained at maximum level and cannot be upgraded further. It has the highest attack power in the game (150), all three elemental attributes, and the most powerful magic attack. It is obtained by completing the Dark Realm.
Total Soul Cost Analysis
To max all upgradeable weapons, you need the following total red souls:
| Weapon | Total Red Souls | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Sword | 50 | Do not upgrade |
| Raizan | 50 | Medium (if stun-focused) |
| Enryuu | 50 | Highest (best damage) |
| Shiden | 50 | Medium (if crowd-focused) |
| Kaede's Dagger | 30 | Low (Kaede sections only) |
| Total (3 elemental swords) | 150 | Minimum recommended |
| Total (all weapons) | 230 | Completionist only |
Farming 150 red souls (to max all three elemental swords) takes approximately 15-20 minutes in the Dark Realm using Issen. Farming all 230 souls for every weapon takes approximately 25-30 minutes.
Optimal Upgrade Strategy
Follow this strategy for the most efficient weapon progression:
- Skip the Normal Sword entirely: Do not spend any souls on it. Switch to the first elemental sword (Raizan) as soon as you obtain it.
- Choose one elemental sword to max first: Pick Enryuu for damage, Raizan for safety, or Shiden for crowd control. Spend 50 red souls to max it before touching the others.
- Max magic gauge alongside weapons: Do not neglect blue soul upgrades. A level 3 weapon with 3 magic bars is better than a level 5 weapon with 1 magic bar.
- Max the other two elemental swords only if you have surplus souls: After your primary sword is maxed and your magic gauge is at level 3+, invest in secondary weapons.
- Obtain the Bishamon Sword: Once you have it, all other weapons become secondary. The Bishamon Sword renders all other weapons obsolete.
- Do not upgrade Kaede's Dagger unless necessary: Kaede sections are short and can be completed with Issen alone.
