All Weapon Upgrade Paths and Max Levels in Onimusha Warlords

Updated: 2026-08-066 sections

In Onimusha Warlords, each weapon (except the Bishamon Sword) can be upgraded through 5 levels using red souls absorbed by the Oni Gauntlet. Each level increases the weapon's attack power and, at certain levels, enhances its magic attack.

The upgrade cost increases progressively, with higher levels requiring more red souls. Understanding the full upgrade path for each weapon helps you plan your soul farming and prioritize which weapons to max first.

Recommendation: Do not upgrade the Normal Sword. It is replaced by elemental swords early in the game and has no magic attack at any level. Save your souls for elemental weapons.

Elemental Sword Upgrade Paths

All three elemental swords follow the same upgrade cost structure but have different base and max attack values:

Raizan (Thunder Sword)

LevelAttackSouls NeededCumulativeMagic Attack

24555Lightning bolt (1 bar)

Bishamon Sword (No Upgrade Path)

LevelAttackSouls NeededMagic Attack
Max (only level)1500 (pre-maxed)Room-wide AoE blast (1 bar)

The Bishamon Sword is obtained at maximum level and cannot be upgraded further. It has the highest attack power in the game (150), all three elemental attributes, and the most powerful magic attack. It is obtained by completing the Dark Realm.

Total Soul Cost Analysis

To max all upgradeable weapons, you need the following total red souls:

WeaponTotal Red SoulsPriority
Normal Sword50Do not upgrade
Raizan50Medium (if stun-focused)
Enryuu50Highest (best damage)
Shiden50Medium (if crowd-focused)
Kaede's Dagger30Low (Kaede sections only)
Total (3 elemental swords)150Minimum recommended
Total (all weapons)230Completionist only

Farming 150 red souls (to max all three elemental swords) takes approximately 15-20 minutes in the Dark Realm using Issen. Farming all 230 souls for every weapon takes approximately 25-30 minutes.

Optimal Upgrade Strategy

Follow this strategy for the most efficient weapon progression:

  1. Skip the Normal Sword entirely: Do not spend any souls on it. Switch to the first elemental sword (Raizan) as soon as you obtain it.
  2. Choose one elemental sword to max first: Pick Enryuu for damage, Raizan for safety, or Shiden for crowd control. Spend 50 red souls to max it before touching the others.
  3. Max magic gauge alongside weapons: Do not neglect blue soul upgrades. A level 3 weapon with 3 magic bars is better than a level 5 weapon with 1 magic bar.
  4. Max the other two elemental swords only if you have surplus souls: After your primary sword is maxed and your magic gauge is at level 3+, invest in secondary weapons.
  5. Obtain the Bishamon Sword: Once you have it, all other weapons become secondary. The Bishamon Sword renders all other weapons obsolete.
  6. Do not upgrade Kaede's Dagger unless necessary: Kaede sections are short and can be completed with Issen alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

It takes 50 red souls total to upgrade a weapon from level 1 to level 5 (maximum). The cost per level is: 5 souls (level 2), 10 souls (level 3), 15 souls (level 4), and 20 souls (level 5). The Bishamon Sword comes pre-maxed and requires no souls.

No, the Bishamon Sword is obtained at its maximum level and cannot be upgraded. It starts with 150 attack power, all three elemental attributes, and a room-wide magic attack. It is already the most powerful weapon in the game when you obtain it.

You should focus on maxing one elemental sword first (50 souls) before investing in the others. Once your primary sword is maxed and your magic gauge is upgraded, you can invest surplus souls in the other two. Maxing all three costs 150 red souls total, which takes about 15-20 minutes to farm in the Dark Realm.

The max attack values are: Normal Sword 60, Raizan 90, Enryuu 100, Shiden 95, Bishamon Sword 150, and Kaede's Dagger 40. Enryuu has the highest max attack among the elemental swords, while the Bishamon Sword has by far the highest overall at 150.
