Onimusha: Warlords gives Samanosuke a small but meaningful arsenal. He starts with a basic Katana and a ranged Normal Bow, then gains three elemental weapons over the course of the story: Raizan (thunder), Enryuu (fire), and Shippuu (wind). Each elemental weapon has its own magic spell, its own upgrade tree, and its own situational strengths. The ultimate prize is the Bishamon Sword, a hidden weapon that outclasses the elemental trio and is the closest thing Warlords has to a true ultimate weapon.
It is important to understand that each elemental weapon is upgraded separately using red souls at Oni shrines. There is no shared pool, so pouring souls into Raizan does not improve Enryuu. This makes upgrade priority a real decision, especially on a first playthrough when souls are limited.
Ranged options -- the Normal Bow and later the Matchlock -- are tools rather than primary weapons. Use them to pick off distant enemies, trigger switches, or soften foes before they reach you. They consume ammunition, so do not rely on them for sustained damage.

Where to Find Each Elemental Weapon
Each elemental weapon is obtained by progressing the story, and each is guarded by a fight. The Raizan is the first, found in a cave shortly after Samanosuke receives the Oni Gauntlet. It is essentially impossible to miss because the path to it is the main route forward. Its thunder magic is fast and excellent for stunning groups.
The Enryuu comes later, in Guildenstern's laboratory. After Samanosuke discovers the genma scientist experimenting on humans, Guildenstern sics a creature named Reynaldo on him. Defeat Reynaldo and the Enryuu is yours. Its fire magic deals heavy damage over an area, making it strong against clustered enemies and many bosses.
The Shippuu is earned by defeating Marcellus on the roof of the keep. This is one of the game's tougher story fights, so arrive with upgraded gear and healing items. The Shippuu's wind magic has wide coverage and is valued for clearing mobs quickly. After all three are in hand, the only weapon left to chase is the hidden Bishamon Sword.
Maxing Weapons with Red Souls
Weapons are upgraded at Oni shrines -- the save points scattered through the castle -- by spending red souls. Each weapon has multiple levels, and higher levels increase both melee damage and the power of the weapon's magic spell. Because souls are shared across all weapons, you must choose where to invest.
A reliable priority is to pick one elemental weapon as your main and push it toward maximum first, then branch out. Enryuu is a popular main because its fire magic chunks bosses, but Raizan's stun utility and Shippuu's crowd clear are equally valid. Whatever you choose, concentrate souls rather than spreading them thin; a single maxed weapon outperforms three mid-level ones in every mandatory fight.
To farm red souls efficiently, fight enemies near a shrine so you can absorb, upgrade, and repeat without traveling. The Dark Realm is also an excellent soul farm once unlocked, since its endless waves drop souls steadily. Use any surplus to round out the other weapons and your magic reserves after your main is maxed.
The Bishamon Sword from the Dark Realm
The Bishamon Sword is Samanosuke's ultimate weapon and the main reason to enter the Dark Realm. The Dark Realm is a survival mini-game accessed through an Oni shrine, in which you descend through waves of Genma with no normal save points. Reaching the bottom rewards the Bishamon Sword, which hits far harder than any elemental weapon and carries its own powerful magic.
Do not attempt the Dark Realm under-leveled. Bring a weapon upgraded to a comfortable level, a stock of healing items, and patience for the long descent. Learn to manage blue souls so you always have magic available for crowd control, and use the gauntlet's soul absorption between waves to top off health and magic from yellow and blue drops. The deeper you go, the more aggressive the enemies become, so conserve your strongest options for the final waves.
Once you hold the Bishamon Sword, the rest of the game -- including any remaining bosses and an Ultimate Mode replay -- becomes markedly easier. It is the single best payoff for engaging with Warlords' survival content. Note that Kaede cannot use it; her own weapons are covered in the FAQ below.
