Chain Issen Advanced Tutorial - How to Link One-Flash Combos in Onimusha

Updated: 2026-08-066 sections

Chain Issen is an advanced technique that allows you to link multiple Issen (One-Flash) counterattacks in succession. After executing a successful Issen on one enemy, you can immediately press the attack button again to flash to a nearby enemy and execute another Issen. This chain can continue as long as there are enemies within range.

Chain Issen is the most efficient combat technique in Onimusha Warlords for three reasons:

  • Each Issen in the chain releases a full soul burst (3x normal)
  • The chain moves you automatically between enemies, providing mobility
  • You are invulnerable during the flash animation between targets

Mastering chain Issen transforms you from a reactive fighter into an unstoppable force that can clear entire rooms in seconds.

What is Chain Issen?

Prerequisites for Chain Issen

Before attempting chain Issen, you must master the following:

Basic Issen Mastery

You must be able to consistently trigger single Issen on at least 70 percent of attempts. If you cannot reliably Issen a single zombie soldier, you are not ready for chains.

Lock-On Proficiency

Chain Issen requires you to maintain lock-on throughout the chain. Practice switching lock-on targets quickly using the directional buttons while holding R1.

Enemy Awareness

You must be aware of enemy positions around you. Chain Issen automatically targets the nearest enemy, so understanding enemy placement helps you predict chain direction.

Timing Discipline

The chain window is tight. You must press attack within approximately 0.3 seconds after each Issen to continue the chain. Hesitation breaks the chain.

Chain Issen Execution Steps

Follow these steps to execute a chain Issen:

  1. Position yourself: Stand in an area with 3 or more enemies within medium range (approximately 3 character lengths apart)
  2. Lock on: Hold R1 and lock onto the nearest enemy
  3. Trigger the first Issen: Wait for an enemy attack and press attack at the correct timing window
  4. Immediately press attack again: As soon as the first Issen connects, press the attack button within 0.3 seconds
  5. Watch the flash: Samanosuke will automatically dash to the next nearest enemy and execute another Issen
  6. Continue pressing: After each Issen, press attack again to chain to the next enemy
  7. End naturally: The chain ends when no more enemies are in range

Each press must be a single, deliberate button press. Do not mash, as this can break the chain timing.

Chain Timing and Rhythm

Chain Issen has a specific rhythm that, once internalized, makes execution much easier:

Chain StepActionTiming Window
1st IssenCounter enemy attack0.1-0.2s before contact
Chain press 1Press attack after 1st Issen0.3s after 1st Issen connects
2nd IssenAuto-flash to next enemyAutomatic
Chain press 2Press attack after 2nd Issen0.3s after 2nd Issen connects
3rd IssenAuto-flash to next enemyAutomatic
ContinueRepeat patternSame 0.3s window

The rhythm is: Flash, press, flash, press, flash, press. Think of it as a steady beat, pressing attack once for each beat in the chain.

Common Chain Issen Mistakes

  • Pressing too late: If you wait more than 0.3 seconds after an Issen, the chain window closes and you perform a normal attack instead
  • Button mashing: Rapidly pressing attack does not help. Each press must be timed to the 0.3-second window after the previous Issen
  • Poor positioning: If enemies are too far apart (more than 4 character lengths), the chain will not connect. Cluster enemies before attempting chains
  • Losing lock-on: If you release R1 during the chain, the lock-on breaks and the chain stops. Maintain lock-on throughout
  • Starting with the wrong enemy: Always start the chain on the enemy that is currently attacking. You cannot chain from an enemy that is not in an attack state
  • Panic during chains: During the chain, you are briefly invulnerable. Do not panic and dodge, as this breaks the chain. Trust the invulnerability frames

Advanced Chain Techniques

Max Chain Optimization

To achieve the longest possible chains (5+ enemies), herd enemies into a cluster before starting. Use hit-and-run tactics to group them, then trigger the chain when 3 or more are within range and at least one is attacking.

Dark Realm Chain Farming

The Dark Realm is the ideal location for chain Issen farming. Floors 1-5 have dense enemy groups perfect for chaining. Each chain of 5 enemies releases approximately 15 soul bursts, making this the fastest soul farming method in the game.

Boss Chain Issen

During boss fights with summoned minions (like Hecuba), use chain Issen to clear the minions while damaging the boss. Start the chain on a minion, and if the boss is within range, the final chain link may target the boss for massive damage.

Oni Mode + Chain Issen

During Oni Mode, all attacks are automatic Issen. This means you can chain without needing enemy attack timing. Simply press attack near each enemy in succession for guaranteed chain Issen. This is the ultimate crowd-clearing technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no hard cap on chain length. The chain continues as long as there are enemies within range (approximately 4 character lengths) and you press the attack button within 0.3 seconds after each Issen. In practice, chains of 5-8 are common in dense enemy groups, and chains of 10+ are possible in the Dark Realm.

After each successful Issen, you have approximately 0.3 seconds to press the attack button again to continue the chain. If you press too late, the chain breaks and you perform a normal attack. The rhythm is a steady beat: flash, press, flash, press.

Yes, you are invulnerable during the flash animation between enemies in a chain. This means you cannot take damage while chaining. However, you are vulnerable for a brief moment at the start (before the first Issen) and after the chain ends. Do not panic and dodge during the chain, as this breaks the sequence.

The Dark Realm is the best practice location. Floors 1-5 feature dense groups of slow enemies (zombies and skeletons) with predictable attack patterns. These enemies are ideal for learning chain timing because their slow attacks give you generous windows to start the initial Issen.
