Issen, also known as One-Flash, is the signature counterattack mechanic in Onimusha Warlords. When executed correctly, it instantly defeats most normal enemies and releases a large burst of souls for absorption into the Oni Gauntlet. The technique rewards precise timing over brute force.
A successful Issen is identifiable by a bright white screen flash, a distinctive slashing sound, and a dramatic slow-motion animation. Mastering Issen is essential for efficient soul farming, surviving boss encounters, and achieving S Rank completion.
What is Issen (One-Flash)?
Issen, also known as One-Flash, is the signature counterattack mechanic in Onimusha Warlords. When executed correctly, it instantly defeats most normal enemies and releases a large burst of souls for absorption into the Oni Gauntlet. The technique rewards precise timing over brute force.
A successful Issen is identifiable by a bright white screen flash, a distinctive slashing sound, and a dramatic slow-motion animation. Mastering Issen is essential for efficient soul farming, surviving boss encounters, and achieving S Rank completion.
The Issen Timing Window
The Issen timing window opens approximately 0.1 to 0.2 seconds before an enemy attack makes contact with your character. You must press the attack button within this brief frame to trigger the counter.
Key Visual and Audio Cues
- Enemy windup: Watch for the apex of the enemy swing animation, just before the downward strike
- Screen distortion: A subtle visual ripple appears at the precise moment the window opens
- Audio peak: The enemy attack sound reaches maximum intensity right before contact
Practice against slow enemies like zombie soldiers first, as their longer windup gives you more reaction time.
Enemy-Specific Issen Timing
Different enemy types have different attack speeds, which affects the Issen window. Below is a reference table for common enemies:
| Enemy Type | Attack Speed | Approx. Window | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zombie Soldier | Slow | 0.20 seconds | Easy |
| Skeleton Warrior | Medium | 0.15 seconds | Medium |
| Three-Eye Demon | Fast | 0.10 seconds | Hard |
| Bat Demon | Very Fast | 0.08 seconds | Very Hard |
| Ogre (large) | Slow but heavy | 0.20 seconds | Medium |
Fast enemies like Bat Demons require near-frame-perfect timing. Learn each enemy type individually in the Dark Realm practice area.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Many players struggle with Issen due to these frequent errors:
- Pressing too early: If you press before the enemy commits to the attack, you perform a regular swing and get hit
- Skipping lock-on: Without R1 lock-on, your attack may target the wrong enemy or miss entirely
- Button mashing: Rapid pressing does not increase Issen chances; it only wastes the window
- Wrong spacing: Too far and the enemy attack will not reach you; too close and you get hit before reacting
- Ignoring animations: Always watch the enemy windup rather than reacting to sound alone
Advanced Issen Techniques
Once you master basic Issen, advance to these techniques:
Chain Issen
After a successful Issen, immediately press attack again. If other enemies are within range, Samanosuke flashes to them and executes another Issen. Chains of 5 or more are possible in dense enemy groups, making this the fastest soul farming method in the game.
Boss Issen
Issen can be triggered on most bosses, but the window is roughly half the size of normal enemy windows. Boss Issen deals heavy damage (roughly 5x a normal hit) but does not instantly defeat them. Focus on learning which boss attacks are Issen-able.
Practice Location
The Dark Realm is the best practice area. Early floors feature slow enemies with generous timing windows, while later floors challenge you with faster, more aggressive foes.
