How to Unlock and Play as Kaede
Kaede is unlocked purely through story progression -- there is no secret condition to meet. The first time you gain control of her is after Samanosuke and Kaede split up at Inabayama Castle early in the game. From that point on, the game periodically pulls you away from Samanosuke and drops you into Kaede's perspective whenever the plot needs her to investigate a different area, rescue a character, or reach a location Samanosuke cannot.
Because Kaede cannot absorb souls, you must approach her stages with a different mindset. Conserve your items -- healing herbs and talismans are precious because you cannot farm red souls to trade for upgrades. Focus on dodging, using her faster movement to circle enemies, and relying on thrown weapons such as kunai to chip down foes from range. When you are forced into melee, use quick strike strings and then back off; do not try to trade blows the way Samanosuke can.
Her sections often contain key items and puzzles that progress the story, so explore thoroughly. If a Kaede stage feels too dangerous, remember that her goal is usually to survive and reach the next objective, not to clear every enemy. Running past groups is a valid and often smart strategy.
Post-Game Unlocks: Ultimate Mode and the Dark Realm
After you defeat Fortinbras and watch the credits, two major unlocks become available. The first is Ultimate Mode. In this mode Samanosuke begins the game with all of his elemental weapons -- Raizan, Enryuu, and Shippuu -- already at maximum level, along with maxed magic and, in many versions, the Bishamon Sword. It is essentially a power trip for replaying the campaign, ideal for clearing out any enemies or collectibles you missed on your first run.
The second unlock is the Dark Realm, a survival mini-game accessed through an Oni shrine. You descend through waves of Genma, and reaching the bottom rewards you with the Bishamon Sword, Samanosuke's ultimate weapon, during a normal playthrough. The Dark Realm is also where much of the late-game challenge lives, so treat it as both a reward and a test.
To get the most out of these unlocks, finish your first playthrough without worrying too much about completion. Then use Ultimate Mode and the Dark Realm together to sweep up Fluorites, Power Jewels, and any weapons you skipped. This two-pass approach is far less frustrating than trying to find everything blind on a first run.
Tips for Managing Both Characters
Managing two characters well comes down to understanding what each one is for. Spend red souls only while playing as Samanosuke, since Kaede cannot use them and you do not want to waste absorption windows. When the game hands control to Kaede, switch your mindset from aggression to caution: hoard items, avoid unnecessary fights, and prioritize reaching the next story trigger.
It also helps to keep both characters' gear in mind. While Samanosuke upgrades through souls at Oni shrines, Kaede relies on weapons and consumables you find in the environment. If you spot a strong thrown weapon or a spare herb during a Samanosuke section, grab it -- it may make a later Kaede section far easier.
Finally, do not panic when the game swaps characters. The transitions are scripted and each character returns to the story in turn. If a Kaede segment is overwhelming you, the problem is usually item management rather than combat skill, so reload an earlier save, spend less, and try again with a fuller inventory.
