Kaede is the ninja who supports Samanosuke, and her sections play by completely different rules. Her defining limitation is that she cannot absorb souls: no Oni Gauntlet means no red souls for upgrades, no yellow souls for healing, and no blue souls for magic. Everything she does must be done with the items and weapons she carries or finds, which makes resource discipline the heart of her playstyle.
Her strengths compensate in specific ways. Kaede is faster than Samanosuke, with quicker movement and faster attack strings that let her dart in and out. She excels at reaching places, solving puzzles, and grabbing key items while Samanosuke handles the heavy fighting elsewhere. Her sections are usually shorter and more objective-focused, so she is rarely asked to clear entire rooms.
The mental shift is the whole game: where Samanosuke farms and spends, Kaede conserves and survives. If you try to play her like a weaker Samanosuke, you will burn through items and die. Play her as a fragile skirmisher who picks her battles, and her sections become manageable.

Weapon and Item Loadout
Kaede's loadout is built around her daggers and thrown weapons rather than elemental swords. Her daggers are fast but short-ranged, so they reward hit-and-run play: land a quick string, then back off before the enemy recovers. Her thrown weapons, such as kunai, give her a ranged option that Samanosuke lacks in melee -- use them to pull single enemies, chip tough foes, or finish off weakened targets without closing in.
Items are Kaede's real safety net. Because she cannot heal with yellow souls, healing herbs and talismans are her only recovery. Carry as many as you can and treat them as precious: do not burn a herb on chip damage you could avoid by simply retreating. Save consumables for genuine emergencies and boss-tier encounters in her sections.
Whenever you find spare weapons or items during Samanosuke's exploration, grab them with Kaede in mind. A thrown weapon or herb picked up early can be the difference between a clean Kaede section and a desperate one, so think ahead about what she will need.
Combat Approach
In combat, Kaede's watchwords are spacing and selectivity. Never engage a full group head-on; instead, use thrown weapons to pull one enemy at a time toward you, then finish it with a quick dagger string before the next one arrives. This single-target approach plays to her speed and hides her fragility. If two or more enemies are active, kite them around obstacles so they file in one by one.
Use her mobility aggressively for defense. Circle enemies, use quick turns to reposition, and retreat through doorways to reset spacing. Kaede's fast attacks also mean she can interrupt slower enemies if you time your entry, but do not get greedy -- two extra hits are not worth eating a full Genma swing when you have no reliable healing.
When a section lets you skip combat entirely, skip it. Many Kaede areas only require reaching an objective or retrieving an item, so running past enemies to the next door is often the optimal play. Fight only what blocks your path, grab the objective, and move on. Treat survival as the win condition, not a body count.
Surviving Kaede's Hardest Sections
Kaede's hardest moments come when the game traps her in a confined space with aggressive Genma, since her fragility is most exposed when she cannot kite. In these rooms, thin the pack immediately: open with thrown weapons or a quick strike on the nearest enemy, then use the brief lull to reposition toward a doorway or corner. Do not stand in the open trading hits.
One recurring danger is the Genma that impersonates Samanosuke. This enemy is dangerous because it looks like an ally at a glance and hits hard. When you encounter it, treat it as a mini-boss: keep your distance, bait its attacks, and punish recoveries with thrown weapons rather than committing to melee. Consume a healing item early if your health dips; do not gamble on dodging everything.
Above all, manage your saves. Because Kaede's sections can end suddenly to a bad engagement, save at every Oni shrine you pass. If a section goes wrong, reloading a recent save with a full item bag is far less painful than pushing forward on fumes and losing progress.
