The Dark Realm (known as Makutsu or Demon Hollow in Japanese) is Onimusha's endgame dungeon -- a procedurally arranged but hand-designed tower of 50 floors filled with increasingly difficult enemies and valuable rewards. It is the ultimate test of your combat skills and gear.
Accessing the Dark Realm
The Dark Realm entrance opens in Chapter 7, located in the basement of the Temple. You need the Demon Seal key item (obtained by defeating the Chapter 6 boss) to enter. Once entered, you can leave and return at any time, and your progress is saved every 10 floors. On your first playthrough, you can only reach floor 30; floors 31-50 are NG+ exclusive.
Progression System
Each floor of the Dark Realm has a specific layout and enemy configuration. To advance to the next floor, you need to defeat all enemies on the current floor and then find the staircase down (or up, depending on how you look at it). Some floors have mini-bosses that must be defeated before the stairs appear. Every 10th floor (10, 20, 30, 40, 50) has a major boss fight and a reward chest.
Risk and Reward
The Dark Realm gets progressively harder as you go deeper, but the rewards also improve. Early floors (1-10) have basic enemies and common rewards. Mid floors (11-30) have elite enemies and rare rewards. Deep floors (31-50) have some of the hardest enemies in the game and the best possible loot. Dying in the Dark Realm sends you back to the entrance and you lose all progress since your last 10-floor checkpoint.
| Floor Range | Enemy Tier | Avg Souls/Floor | Reward Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-10 | Basic | 100-200 | Common items |
| 11-20 | Elite | 250-400 | Rare items, accessories |
| 21-30 | Advanced | 400-600 | Rare materials, unique items |
| 31-40 (NG+) | Nightmare | 700-1,000 | NG+ exclusive gear |
| 41-50 (NG+) | Abyssal | 1,000-1,500 | Best items in game |

Floors 1-10: The Upper Hollow
The first 10 floors of the Dark Realm are designed to introduce you to the concept. Enemies are not much harder than normal story enemies, and the layouts are simple.
Floor Layout Patterns
Floors 1-10 use three basic layouts that repeat: (1) Single room with enemies scattered around, (2) Corridor with rooms branching off, (3) Arena-style circular room. Each floor has 3-8 enemies depending on the floor number (higher floors within this range have more enemies). The stairs appear in a random location after all enemies are defeated.
Enemy Types
The enemies on floors 1-10 are all basic types you have seen before in the story: sword grunts, spear demons, and archers. Floor 5 has a mini-boss: a single Elite Sword Demon with 500 HP (twice as much as a normal one). Floor 10 has the first major boss: the Dark Acolyte, a mage-type enemy with 2,000 HP that summons minions and casts fireballs.
Rewards and Loot
Each floor has a chance to drop common consumables (Medicine, Magic Herbs) and a small number of souls (100-200 per floor). The Floor 10 boss drops the Soul Amulet (1.3x soul gain) and 500 red souls. This is a significant power spike and makes the Dark Realm worth doing early if you can handle it.
Strategy for First-Time Players
If you enter the Dark Realm as soon as it opens (Chapter 7), you will likely have a level 2-3 weapon and 300-350 HP. This is enough to reach floor 5 or 6 on normal difficulty, but floor 10 will be challenging. We recommend at least a level 3 weapon and 400 HP before attempting floor 10. If you die, you restart from floor 1, so it is better to leave early than to push too far and lose progress.
Floors 11-20: The Deep Halls
Floors 11-20 introduce new enemy types and more complex layouts. This is where the Dark Realm starts to get challenging for intermediate players.
New Enemy Types
Floors 11-20 introduce elite enemy variants and new types not seen in the main story:
- Elite Spear Demon: Faster and stronger than regular spear demons, with a charge attack.
- Shadow Assassins: Fast ninja-type enemies that turn invisible and attack from behind.
- Hellhounds: Fast dog-like demons that attack in packs of 3-5.
- Dark Mages: Ranged magic users that cast elemental spells.
Mini-Boss Rotation
Floors 12, 15, and 18 have mini-bosses. The mini-bosses rotate between three types: Armored Ogre (slow but very tough), Flame Wraith (fast and deals fire damage), and Ice Golem (high defense, freeze attacks). Each mini-boss has 3,000-4,000 HP and drops a rare item.
Floor 20 Boss: The Hollow Knight
Floor 20 has the second major boss: the Hollow Knight. This is a heavily armored knight with a large sword and shield. It has 6,000 HP and uses a combination of sword swings, shield bashes, and charge attacks. Its most dangerous attack is a spinning slash that hits in a 360-degree radius -- you need to dodge backward or jump to avoid it.
The Hollow Knight is weak to lightning element (1.5x damage). If you have the Raizen at level 3 or higher, this fight is manageable. The reward for defeating it is the Dark Ring (increases dark element damage by 30%) and 1,000 red souls.
Elemental Obstacles
Starting on floor 11, some floors have environmental hazards: fire traps, ice patches, and lightning orbs. These can damage you but can also damage enemies if you position correctly. Use them to your advantage -- luring enemies into fire traps deals significant damage for free.
Floors 21-30: The Demon Forge
Floors 21-30 are the deepest floors available on a first playthrough. Enemies are significantly tougher and the bosses are among the hardest in the game outside of post-game content.
Advanced Enemy Types
New enemy types on these floors include:
- Demon Lords: Powerful sword-wielding demons with multiple attack combos and Issen-able attacks.
- Poison Wasps: Flying enemies that deal poison damage over time.
- Stone Golems: Very high defense, slow but powerful attacks.
- Doppelgangers: Enemies that mimic your appearance and copy your attacks.
Floor 25 Mini-Boss: Twin Demons
Floor 25 has a unique mini-boss fight against two demons at once: one fire, one ice. They have 3,000 HP each and their attacks complement each other. The key strategy is to focus on one at a time (we recommend killing the ice one first because it is slower) while avoiding the other's attacks. If you can separate them by luring one around a pillar, the fight becomes much easier.
Floor 30 Boss: The Demon Forge Master
The Demon Forge Master is the boss of floor 30 and the final boss of the first-playthrough Dark Realm. It is a massive demon with a hammer and forge-based attacks. It has 10,000 HP and three phases:
- Phase 1 (100-66% HP): Hammer swings and ground slams. Standard melee patterns.
- Phase 2 (66-33% HP): Starts throwing fireballs and using forge bellows to push you back.
- Phase 3 (33-0% HP): Enrages, attacks faster, and creates pools of lava on the ground.
The reward for defeating the Forge Master is the Forge Hammer (a unique heavy weapon) and 2,000 red souls. You also unlock the "Dark Realm Conqueror" achievement/trophy.
Time-Limited Challenge on Floor 30
Floor 30 also has a special timed challenge: defeat all enemies on the floor within 1 minute and you get an extra reward (1,000 bonus souls and a rare upgrade material). This is entirely optional but worth attempting if you have good gear and Issen skill.
Floors 31-50: The Abyssal Depths (NG+ Exclusive)
Floors 31-50 are only accessible in New Game+ and represent the hardest content in Onimusha outside of superbosses. Only players with optimized endgame builds should attempt these floors.
Nightmare Enemies (Floors 31-40)
These floors feature "Nightmare" variants of existing enemies with enhanced stats and new attacks. Nightmare enemies have 2-3x more HP than their standard versions and deal 1.5x more damage. They also have new attack patterns -- for example, Nightmare Sword Demons gain a projectile slash attack.
Floor 35 has a mini-boss gauntlet: you fight three mini-bosses back-to-back without healing between them. The three are the Armored Ogre, Flame Wraith, and Ice Golem, all in their Nightmare variants. This is one of the hardest challenges in the Dark Realm.
Floor 40 Boss: The Void Walker
The Void Walker is the boss of floor 40. It is a mysterious figure that can teleport and create copies of itself. It has 15,000 HP and uses a combination of teleport strikes, shadow clones, and dark magic. The hardest part of this fight is distinguishing the real Void Walker from its clones -- the real one has slightly brighter eyes.
The reward is the Void Cloak (a unique accessory that makes you invisible when standing still) and 3,000 red souls.
Abyssal Enemies (Floors 41-50)
The deepest 10 floors feature "Abyssal" enemies -- the strongest non-boss enemies in the game. These include the Abyssal Knight (massive HP and defense), Abyssal Mage (devastating magic), and Abyssal Wyrm (flying serpent with poison breath). Each Abyssal enemy has 2,000-5,000 HP and can easily kill undergeared players in one or two hits.
Floor 50: The Oni Chamber
Floor 50 is the deepest floor of the Dark Realm. It contains the Oni Chamber, a massive arena where you face the ultimate Dark Realm challenge. The specifics of floor 50 are part of the Oni God superboss questline -- you fight a gauntlet of enemies followed by a powerful Oni warrior. The reward for completing floor 50 is the Oni Armor set (one of the requirements for the Oni God superboss) and 5,000 red souls.
Dark Realm Farming: Best Floors and Routes
The Dark Realm is one of the best places in the game for soul farming and rare item farming. Different floor ranges are better for different types of farming.
Soul Farming Routes
Early Game (Floors 1-5): Good for players who just unlocked the Dark Realm. Expect 100-150 souls per run (clearing floors 1-5 and exiting). Not amazing but better than most story areas at that point in the game.
Mid Game (Floors 11-15): Once you can comfortably clear floor 10, farming floors 11-15 yields 250-400 souls per run. The elite enemies drop more souls and have better item drop rates. This is the sweet spot for mid-game farming.
Late Game / NG+ (Floors 21-25): For players with endgame gear, farming floors 21-25 yields 700-1,000 souls per run on NG+ hard mode. The advanced enemies give massive soul rewards and drop rare upgrade materials.
Endgame (Floors 41-45): The absolute best soul farming in the game, but only for players with optimized builds. You can get 1,500-2,000 souls per 5-floor run on NG+ hard mode. That is roughly 10,000-12,000 souls per hour.
Rare Item Farming
Certain floors are known for dropping specific rare items:
- Floor 8: High chance to drop Large Medicine
- Floor 14: Good drop rate for upgrade materials
- Floor 22: Best place to farm Elixirs
- Floor 32 (NG+): Drops rare NG+ exclusive accessories
- Floor 45 (NG+): Only place to farm Abyssal Materials (for ultimate weapon upgrades)
Efficient Farming Strategy
The most efficient way to farm the Dark Realm is to find a 5-floor range you can clear quickly and reliably, then repeatedly clear those 5 floors and exit/re-enter. Do not try to go deeper if your goal is farming -- the time spent on harder floors reduces your souls-per-hour. Use the 10-floor checkpoints to your advantage: start from the floor 10 or 20 checkpoint and farm the next 5 floors, then use a return item to go back.
Dark Realm Survival Tips and Build Recommendations
The Dark Realm is punishing, but the right preparation and strategy make it manageable. Here is what intermediate players need to know.
Recommended Gear Loadout
For general Dark Realm exploration, we recommend:
- Primary Weapon: Raizen (lightning katana) at the highest level you have. Fast, versatile, and effective against most enemy types.
- Secondary Weapon: Enryuu (fire longsword) for dealing with ice-element enemies and breaking shields.
- Accessory 1: Protection Amulet (20% damage reduction) -- essential for survival.
- Accessory 2: Soul Earrings or Soul Amulet for more soul gain, or Speed Boots for mobility.
- Consumables: 3-5 Large Medicine, 2 Elixirs, 2-3 Magic Elixirs, Antidotes (for poison floors).
Survival Tips
1. Clear rooms systematically: Do not rush. Pull enemies one at a time when possible. Use ranged attacks to split groups.
2. Use the environment: Pillars and walls can block ranged attacks. Lure enemies into traps. Use choke points to fight one enemy at a time.
3. Know when to heal: Heal when you drop below 40% HP, not when you are near death. It is better to waste a healing item than to die and lose 10 floors of progress.
4. Build Oni gauge before boss floors: If you know a boss is coming up (floors 10, 20, 25, 30, etc.), save your Oni gauge for the boss fight. Do not waste it on trash enemies right before the boss.
Build Recommendations by Floor Range
Floors 1-20: Balanced build with focus on survivability. Health upgrade to 400+ HP, weapon at level 3-4, Protection Amulet. You can brute-force these floors with decent gear.
Floors 21-30: Need more damage. Weapon at level 4-5, Oni gauge at 5+ bars, attack-boosting accessories. You need to kill enemies quickly before they overwhelm you.
Floors 31-50 (NG+): Fully optimized build required. Max-level weapon, 500+ HP, 6 Oni bars, best accessories, mastery of Issen and dodge canceling. You need to play near-perfectly to survive the deepest floors.
