Onimusha features ten unique weapons across the main campaign, each with different attack patterns, element types, and upgrade costs. Not all weapons are equally valuable in NG+, and investing souls in the wrong weapon can leave you underpowered for hard mode.
Tier List for NG+ Hard Mode
The S-tier weapons for NG+ hard mode are the Raizen (lightning element katana) and the Enryuu (fire element longsword). These two weapons have the highest damage per second at max level and their element effects scale particularly well against NG+ enemies, which tend to have higher elemental weakness multipliers.
A-tier weapons include the Hyoutan (ice element dual blades) and the Shippuu (wind element spear). These are excellent secondary weapons with strong crowd control but slightly lower single-target damage than the S-tier options. B-tier weapons like the Doshin (axe) and the Kagekaze (ninja blade) are situational and generally not worth maxing unless you specifically enjoy their playstyles.
C-tier and below weapons include the starting katana, the bow, and various niche weapons that are outclassed by better options. You should get these to level 2 or 3 for variety but never waste the souls to max them.
| Tier | Weapon | Element | Max ATK | Attack Speed | NG+ Viability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | Raizen | Lightning | 185 | Fast | Essential |
| S | Enryuu | Fire | 210 | Medium | Essential |
| A | Hyoutan | Ice | 140 | Very Fast | High |
| A | Shippuu | Wind | 165 | Medium | High |
| B | Doshin | Earth | 240 | Slow | Medium |
| B | Kagekaze | Dark | 155 | Fast | Medium |

Upgrade Cost Efficiency Analysis
Every weapon follows the same upgrade cost curve: 200 souls for level 2, 500 for level 3, 1,200 for level 4, and 2,500 for level 5. The total cost per weapon is 4,400 souls. However, the damage gained per soul spent varies dramatically between levels.
Damage Per Soul By Level
Using the Raizen as an example: base damage is 80 at level 1. Level 2 adds 12 damage (12 / 200 = 0.06 damage per soul). Level 3 adds another 15 (15 / 500 = 0.03 dps). Level 4 adds 18 (18 / 1,200 = 0.015 dps). Level 5 adds 20 (20 / 2,500 = 0.008 dps). The efficiency drops by roughly half at each level, making early upgrades much more cost-effective than late ones.
The Level 3 Breakpoint
Level 3 is the most efficient stopping point for weapons you do not main. A level 3 weapon costs only 700 souls (15.9% of the max upgrade cost) but reaches approximately 65% of its maximum damage potential. For comparison, going from level 3 to level 5 costs 3,700 souls (84.1% of total cost) for only 35% more damage. This is why the "all weapons to level 3 first" strategy is so powerful for intermediate players.
Exception: Your Primary Weapon
Your main weapon is the exception to the efficiency rule. Since you will use it for 60-70% of the game, the absolute damage matters more than cost efficiency. Most players should max one S-tier weapon before spreading upgrades to others. The break-even point where maxing your primary becomes better than leveling multiple weapons to level 3 is at approximately the 30-hour mark of playtime.
Element Synergy System Explained
Onimusha's weapon elements are more than just flavor -- they interact with enemy weaknesses, environmental hazards, and even each other through combo reactions. Understanding element synergy can dramatically increase your effective damage output.
Element Weakness Multipliers
Every enemy has a primary element and a weakness element. Hitting an enemy with its weakness element deals 1.5x damage on normal difficulty and 1.75x on hard mode. Some enemies also have resistances that reduce damage by 0.5x. The element triangle is: Fire > Ice > Lightning > Fire (similar to rock-paper-scissors), with Wind and Earth as neutral elements that are neither strong nor weak against anything but have special utility effects.
Element Reactions
When you apply two different elements to an enemy within 3 seconds, they create a reaction effect. Fire + Ice creates "Steam Burst" which deals AOE damage and stuns. Lightning + Water creates "Shock Surge" which chains to nearby enemies. Fire + Wind creates "Blaze Storm" which creates a damage-over-time fire tornado. These reactions deal approximately 200 base damage plus 50% of your weapon's attack stat, making them powerful burst options.
Weapon Switch Element Combos
The most advanced application of element synergy is the weapon-switch combo: attack with one element, switch weapons mid-combo, and attack with a complementary element to trigger a reaction. The timing window is generous (3 seconds), so you can comfortably switch between a fire weapon and an ice weapon in a single combo to trigger Steam Burst. This technique is particularly effective against bosses, which take full damage from element reactions.
Optimal NG Upgrade Order
For your first playthrough, the order in which you find and upgrade weapons is constrained by story progression. Here is the optimal upgrade path that balances progression speed with end-game power.
Early Game (Chapters 1-3)
Start with the standard katana and upgrade it to level 2 (200 souls) as soon as possible. This is your only weapon for the first few hours and the damage boost makes the early bosses manageable. As soon as you get the Enryuu (fire longsword) in Chapter 3, switch to it as your primary and start upgrading it. Do not invest any more souls in the starting katana.
Mid Game (Chapters 4-7)
Push the Enryuu to level 3 (500 more souls, 700 total). Then get the Raizen (lightning katana) when you find it in Chapter 5 and immediately bring it to level 3 as well. By this point you have two strong elemental options for dealing with different enemy types. Also upgrade your health to 400 HP during this period.
Late Game (Chapters 8-12)
Choose one primary weapon (Raizen or Enryuu, depending on preference) and push it to level 5. This costs 3,700 additional souls from level 3 but gives you the damage needed for the final bosses. Get your secondary weapon to level 4 if you have spare souls, and make sure health is at 500 HP minimum. Upgrade the Oni gauge to at least 5 bars for the final boss fight.
NG+ Hard Mode Optimal Build
NG+ hard mode is where weapon upgrade decisions really matter. Enemies have approximately 2.5x more health and deal 1.8x more damage, so you need optimized gear to survive and kill efficiently.
Primary Weapon: Raizen at Level 5
The Raizen is the best primary weapon for hard mode because lightning is the most universally useful element -- very few enemies resist lightning, and many are weak to it. Its fast attack speed also makes it safer than slower weapons on hard mode, where getting hit once can cost you 40-60% of your health. At level 5, Raizen deals 185 base damage with a 1.3x lightning bonus on weak enemies, for 240 effective damage per hit.
Secondary Weapon: Hyoutan at Level 4
The Hyoutan (ice dual blades) at level 4 is the best secondary weapon for hard mode. Its fast attack speed is great for building stun, and the ice element freezes enemies solid for 2 seconds on a full charge, giving you breathing room in tough fights. You do not need it at level 5 -- the damage difference between level 4 and 5 is not worth the 2,500 soul cost for a secondary weapon.
Crowd Control: Shippuu at Level 3
Keep the Shippuu (wind spear) at level 3 for crowd control situations. Its wide sweeps and wind element knockback are perfect for dealing with groups of weak enemies without wasting your primary weapon's durability (if durability is a factor in your version). The level 3 breakpoint gives you enough damage for it to still be relevant against basic enemies.
Endgame Weapon Strategy and Completion
For players aiming for 100% completion or preparing for the Dark Realm's deepest floors, your weapon upgrade strategy needs to shift from efficiency to completeness.
Dark Realm Weapon Requirements
The Dark Realm (Demon Hollow) has specific weapon requirements on certain floors. Floor 20 requires a fire weapon to break environmental obstacles. Floor 35 requires lightning to activate mechanisms. Floor 50 requires all five elements to unlock the final chamber. If you are planning to tackle the deep Dark Realm, you need at least level 3 in one weapon of each element type.
Completionist Upgrade Order
After maxing your primary weapon and getting health, magic, and Oni gauge to cap, upgrade weapons in this order: (1) Get all elemental weapons to level 3 for Dark Realm access, (2) Max your secondary weapon to level 5, (3) Max all A-tier weapons, (4) Finally, max B-tier and C-tier weapons for the completion achievement. The total soul cost for maxing all 10 weapons is 44,000 souls.
Durability Considerations
"Higher level weapons generally have better durability, but the increase is modest (+10% per level). For weapons you use constantly, the durability increase from leveling can save you repair kits over the course of a long playthrough. This is a minor consideration but worth factoring in if you find yourself constantly repairing your main weapon.More Onimusha Guides
