How to Switch Between Samanosuke and Kaede in Onimusha Warlords

Character System Overview

Onimusha Warlords features two playable characters: Samanosuke Akechi, a samurai warrior equipped with the Oni Gauntlet, and Kaede, a ninja sent to assassinate him who becomes his ally. Unlike some action games, you cannot freely switch between them at any time.

Character switching is determined by the story. At certain points in the narrative, the game automatically switches control from Samanosuke to Kaede or vice versa. Understanding when these switches occur and how to optimize each character is key to efficient progression.

Samanosuke Akechi Profile

Samanosuke is the primary character for most of the game. His access to the Oni Gauntlet gives him soul absorption, weapon upgrades, magic attacks, and Oni Mode. He has five weapons: Normal Sword, Raizan, Enryuu, Shiden, and the Bishamon Sword.

Kaede Profile

Kaede is a fast, agile character but lacks the power and versatility of Samanosuke. She cannot absorb souls, use magic attacks, or access Oni Mode. Her dagger has low damage and cannot be upgraded. Kaede sections require a more hit-and-run playstyle.

How Character Switching Works

Character switching in Onimusha Warlords is story-driven and automatic. There is no manual switch button. Switches occur at specific story points:

Common Switch Triggers

• Story events: Certain cutscenes trigger a character switch
• Area access: Some areas are only accessible by a specific character
• Parallel objectives: Samanosuke and Kaede may pursue different objectives simultaneously
• Puzzle requirements: Some puzzles require Kaede's nimble movement to solve

When a switch occurs, a cutscene plays and control transfers automatically. You cannot switch back until the story brings the characters together again.

Strategy for Kaede Sections

Since Kaede lacks magic and upgrades, her sections require a different approach:

Combat Strategy

• Hit and run: Attack 1-2 times, then dodge away. Never trade hits.
• Use Issen: Kaede can perform Issen, which is her main damage source since her normal attacks are weak
• Avoid groups: Kaede struggles against multiple enemies. Lure them one at a time.
• Use items: Since Kaede cannot heal through souls, use Herbs and Medicines liberally

Exploration Strategy

• Kaede can reach areas Samanosuke cannot, such as narrow passages and high ledges
• Look for alternate routes and hidden items in Kaede sections
• Some keys and items found by Kaede are needed for Samanosuke's progression

Samanosuke vs Kaede Comparison

Samanosuke is superior in nearly every category. Kaede's main advantages are speed and access to unique areas. When playing as Kaede, focus on Issen and evasion rather than direct combat.
